You are back where you began
Twenty chambers, and the stair has climbed only to deliver you to its own
first step. That is a strange loop: moving
steadily upward through the levels of a system and arriving, transformed,
at the place you started. Hofstadter's wager is that a self — an “I” —
is exactly this kind of loop, a system that grew rich enough to point at itself.
